Around and About

The Villa Franc-Daut is situated less than a mile away from the centre of Castillon-la-Bataille – a classic French market town with an eclectic mix of shops bars and restaurants along the banks of the Dordogne river. The renowned open market operates every Monday morning and is a great place to find locally grown fruit and veg. There are many cafes and of course local bakeries to get your morning croissants and baguettes.

If you don’t feel like cooking there are a wide range of restaurants all within a 10 minute walk (or a 5 minute drive) of The Villa ranging from traditional French to North African and Asian. In addition there are a number of excellent take-aways. There are also lots of good restaurants a ten minute drive away in St Emilion and in the surrounding villages. During July and August there are night gourmet markets almost every night in the area and these are a great way to relax and enjoy France at its best!

A 2 minute drive from the villa will take you to the recently refurbished and expanded Leclerc hypermarket where you can find everything you need.

Obviously the big attraction of the area is the wine-making and the stunning chateaux of the region. Centred around the remarkably beautiful town of St Emilion (a 10 minute drive from The Villa), the area is as fascinating for lovers of history and architecture as it is for wine. There is lots to do for adults and children alike and if you don’t fancy a day by the pool, then a bike or Segway tour of St Emilion is a must. Canoeing down the river is also very popular with guests.

A 45 minute drive (or train journey if you prefer) and you can be in the centre of Bordeaux, one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in Europe and undoubtedly the nicest in France. The range of shops, bars and restaurants, including Gordon Ramsey’s Michelin 2* Le Pressoir d’Argent within the lovely Grand Hotel, is amazing and all within the city centre.

The Villa is also within striking distance of the Dordogne region which offers a huge range of things to see and do.
